Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts to design stages for the new CEBIT

In an exciting first for CEBIT, the Faculty of Media, Information and Design at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HsH) is partnering with Deutsche Messe to craft the look and feel of the show’s d!talk conferences. The design brief encompasses everything from defining the creative direction to developing the interior fit-out, graphics and visuals. Over 50 students from the fields of Experimental Design, Interior Design, and Integrated Media and Communication are helping to shape the new CEBIT for the 2018 season by bringing their fresh, creative design ideas to the staging of the d!talk program’s six conference zones.

The d!talk conference program is a core part of the new CEBIT, providing a forum for the vitally important economic, political and social discourse arising from and surrounding the digitization trend. Comprising the Grand Central Stage and eight other stages spread across the exhibition site, the d!talk program is the new show’s transfer hub for know-how and trailblazing ideas. The speakers and participants will include lateral thinkers, visionaries and leading experts from business, science and politics.

“The new CEBIT features tried-and-tested tradeshow elements, inspiring conference events and special networking platforms, all embedded in an energizing and captivating festival of bright ideas for the digital future,” commented Oliver Frese, the member of Deutsche Messe’s Managing Board responsible for CEBIT.

The university’s contribution to the project is overseen by Dr. Dorothee Weinlich, Professor for Communication Design. She explains the design concept: “We see the d!talk area at CEBIT primarily as a knowledge transfer hub, but also as a ‘chill-out’ zone where people can take a break from the sensory overload of the show, hang out and ‘recharge their batteries’. As the manager of this project, I’ve made it a top priority to ensure that the students are able to empathize and identify with the target group. Their instructions were to develop their ideas in small, interdisciplinary groups, network with one another and then creatively implement the ideas they come up with. In this way, they are proceeding in exactly the same way as CEBIT visitors do.”

The look and feel of the d!talk stages is inspired by the words “reload – connect – create” and offers tradeshow and conference attendees an opportunity to share ideas and information, network and compare notes. d!talk is where international business partners, experts, conference speakers and others can get together and debate. It is a place to make new contacts and renew acquaintances. The idea is that the insights and buzz of the d!talk presentations and workshops will spark new directions and trains of thought.

With this design brief in mind, the students are creating unique ambiances which, alongside core elements like stages, auditoriums and workshop rooms, will feature modules that break the conventional conference room mold. For instance, the design will include so-called “communication boulders”, intelligent trees and even real birch groves. The spaces and imagery being created will resonate with and explore topics such as artificial intelligence at work, shifts in our workaday and private lives, individual experience, generational traits and contemporary trends such as DIY, urban and guerrilla gardening, slow living and sustainability.
